Everybody dreams of a large apartment, where each item has its rightful place. Just imagine: things do not need to be crowded on a shelf in a single closet, and even a large vase will not have to share the space on the chest of drawers with other different little things. However, in order to realize the dream of a spacious apartment, it is not necessary to demolish the walls or save up for huger apartment. It’s enough to know a few tricks that will help your place look bigger – even an apartment of 30 square meters will look twice as much.
1. White will not let you down
The best way to visually enlarge any space is to design it in natural light colors. They allow you to “open” the room, while dark shades can “squeeze” even the largest room. White, beige, light gray shades will also help to create a background for creative experiments. You can keep the entire interior in a minimalist style or dilute it with bright spots of furniture and decor. However, remember: you should not introduce more than two additional colors into the interior design.
2.Hidden storage systems and small furniture
In a small apartment every centimeter counts, so it is better not to neglect the space along the walls. Use built-in closed cabinets with smooth facades and without handles (with push-to-open system). This technique will allow you to create a plane surface, which will not break into space, but will become its organic part. Moreover, closed cabinets will help you hide the things stored in them, which, when left in sight, often create visual noise. Also avoid massive bulky furniture that looks out of place in small rooms. Take a closer look at the lighter and more functional designs – and it will help your apartment look bigger.
3.Mirrors: space multiplied by “two”
In order to vusually increase the space and create the illusion that its area is at least twice as large, use reflective surfaces in the interior design. So, in order to visually enlarge the kitchen or bathroom, it is worth choosing on the glossy facade of the headset. Mirror wall tiles will help you expand the hallway or living room: it will not only become a bright decorative accent in your interior, but will also allow you to hide the load-bearing structures. Another useful and stylish element of decor is a composition of non-standard shape mirrors. Several round mirrors of different diameters will look great above the dressing table in your bedroom.
4.Smart space organization: zoning rules
Differentiation of the space of the apartment is necessary for a comfortable life. But remember: solid and massive partitions not only add weight to the interior, but also take away precious centimeters from the rooms. It is better to give preference to open spaces or to use slatted and glass partitions or a podium. Small apartments also often combine a kitchen with a living room. Interesting solution: in this type of room try to replace the dining group with a bar counter, and above it place pendant lights that will draw a weightless border between the kitchen set and the living room area.
5.Add light
Natural lighting is your main assistant, which can visually expand any room. Let it into the apartment – try not to clutter the windowsill. For the same reason, discard dense heavy curtains, which also “eat” the space around the window. Better pay attention to the roller and cassette blinds. There is one rule: the lighter they are, the better. However, if there is not enough of natural light in the apartment, use the built-in lamps as artificial light. Take note: with the help of light, you can also emphasize the zoning in the apartment or, on the contrary, smooth the boundaries between the rooms.
6.Low ceilings are not a problem
High ceilings add air and space to the room, but not everyone is lucky to have them. If the ceilings in the apartment are low, it is better to sacrifice a large artsy decor and massive chandeliers. But if you really want to, use a tricky technique: paint the ceiling in the color of the walls – and they will seem higher.
7.Don’t use too much accessories and decoration
Small figurines and paintings in a large frames are good only for large rooms in which each element of decor will have enough space. The ideal decoration for a small apartment would be live plants with large leaves. When choosing flowerpots for them, follow the principle of minimalism and give preference to simple geometric shapes. Make sure that the decor elements not only take up space, but also are functional. For example, include caskets that provide additional storage space, or wooden kitchen boards, which can simultaneously be used both for cutting and for decorative serving of dishes – you save the space and make your apartment look bigger.
